A new take on an old fairy tale makes “sleeping beauty” a sex worker who actually has sex or something like sex with clients who pay to molest her while she slumbers. Written and directed by Australian writer Julia Leigh, the film comes out today. Though I haven’t seen it, judging from the synopsis on the official website and several reviews, I think I can sum it up: a slightly more feminist (and I mean second wave feminism – prostitution is exploitation, johns are scumbags…) Eyes Wide Shot, the horrible 1999 Stanley Kubrick film with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman as an affluent couple who gain entrée into a super secret, super ridiculous sex club. Everyone floats about in masks and black tie while naked models submit to vague domination. Anthony Lane in The New Yorker aptly describes the scene as “the asexual’s idea of what sex is meant to look like…”
